Water Softener Resin Cleaner & Iron Remover

We would like to take a moment to let you know about a great product for just about anyone who has a water softener in their home: our home Water Softener Cleaner.

Over time, the performance of every water softener will decline. The softener resin has a typical lifespan of 7-12 years in most applications. During this time, the ability of the resin to remove hardness and iron from the water gradually declines. This is partially because the brine rinse can not remove 100% of the hardness and iron from the resin during the rinse/backwash cycle. Particularly in the case of iron, which has a much stronger molecular bond with the water softener resin, the salt rinse just can not break these bonds. The result is excess iron that is trapped in the resin bed.

At WSF, we have found a simple, effective and very inexpensive way to prolong the life and restore the performance of most water softener resin beds. Our Water Softener Cleaner is simple to use and the cost is under $10.

Simply add the entire 4# bottle of Water Softener Cleaner to your brine tank. With the next rinse/backwash cycle, this chemical will break the molecular bonds between the resin and the iron, rinsing away the trapped iron from the resin.

Iron Reduction Filter Cartridges

Do you have an awful metallic taste to your water? This is a strong indication that you probably have high levels of iron in your water. You may notice that when combined with the tannin in tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages, your beverage may produce an unpleasant gray to black appearance. An iron reduction filter cartridge is what you may need in your home.

By using an iron reduction filter cartridge you will notice that the staining in toilets, plumbing fixtures, tableware, and your laundry will decrease and eventually disappear. As little as 0.3 ppm of iron can cause these issues. The type of iron that causes this condition is known as Ferric Iron and there is a specific way to handle this problem.

In most cases just a 3 ppm iron reduction filter cartridge is enough for a typical household. The filter cartridge should be placed ahead of your water softener and will filter out the sediment before the water gets into and causes damage to your water softener. You will also protect your pipes and water heater from damage as well.

Turbidity Filters

What the heck is "turbidity" anyway?

Generally, turbidity is a really fancy name for cloudiness in water. Turbidity can be caused by a number of things, but the most common is simply dirt. Particles of sand, silt, and rock particles can lead to cloudy (or turbid) water. It is generally desirable, and sometimes absolutely necessary to clean up turbid water.

In many cases, a sediment filter will do the job quite nicely. One challenge, however, is that the sediment filter cartridge may require frequent replacement to maintain water flow and optimum performance. A specialized turbidity filter will require less maintenance and will provide better performance than a standard whole house water filter can achieve in most applications.

Acid Well Water Treatment

If you live in the Eastern part of the United States, there is a good chance that your well produces water that is somewhat acidic. Acidic well water will corrode copper pipes and leave blue/green stains on your toilets, sinks, bathtubs and showers.

If you have acidic water, the best solution is to install an acid neutralizer system. These systems dissolve calcium carbonate (calcite) into the water, raising the PH to a non-corrosive level.

Many times, however, the process of adding calcite to the water introduces calcium hardness. Hard water leads to other (less destructive) problems with your water such as scale on plumbing and fixtures. Water hardness also makes soap harder to lather in your laundry and may result in using more soap than necessary to do the job. Most of the time, a water softener is installed along with an acid neutralizer to fully treat acid well water.
